The Iberia Plus loyalty programme offers the best facilities to members who want to trade their points for free flights, according to a study by the international consultants IdeaWorks published on the web page of the weekly news magazine The Economist.
The study examined 6,400 reservations made on the web sites of 10 major European and US airlines, and found that Iberia allowed its frequent flyers to choose a flight and flying time in 83% of all cases, which was nearly 20 percentage points above its nearest rival. At bottom were carriers who satisfied only 4% or 7% of their frequent flyers’ requests.
In 1991 Iberia became the first European airline to institute a frequent flyers points programme to reward customer loyalty. Today the Iberia Plus programme has nearly four million members around the world.
The Iberia Plus programme has admitted numerous associated companies that offer discounts and other advantages to its members. These include the major Spanish and international hotel chains, car rental firms, credit card operators, providers of heath and beauty services, and all Iberia’s airline partners in the oneworld alliance.
The www.iberia.com web site supplies detailed information about the programme and a personal space where members can view their point balances, make reservations, and learn about the company’s special offers.
In 2008, Iberia Plus cardholders exchanged their points for some 670,000 free flights.
