Haiti still needs help, and Iberia carries several tonnes of humanitarian aid on its daily flights to Santo Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic which shares the Caribbean island of Hispaniola with earthquake-torn Haiti. Together with its employee NGO, Mano a Mano (Hand to Hand) the Spanish airline has delivered 196 tonnes of aid in the two weeks since the quake struck the island, including drinking water and food, blanket, torches, candles, facemasks, sterile gloves, clothing, and body bags. To accommodate the larger load as well as crews of aid workers, it has used its largest aircraft, the Airbus A-340/600, with greater cargo space and 100 seats more than are normally available on the route. Also contributing to these shipments are Spain’s AECID (Spanish International Development Cooperation Agency), the Red Cross, the Reina Sofía Foundation and UNICEF.
Fund-raising Campaign
Iberia has also launched a campaign to obtain donations to the Red Cross from passengers, via the web site www.iberia.com.
The airline will hold drawings for 100 air tickets, in the form of 50 trips for two within Europe, for people who donate at least 50 euros. To take part in the drawing, donors must send a copy of the Red Cross receipt for the donation to ayudahaiti@iberia.es, along with their Iberia Plus membership number. Non-members wishing to participate can sign up on line at www.iberia.com for the Iberia Plus frequent flyers programme. Iberia employees can also donate through the company’s intranet.
